Operators, broadcasters, and content providers face numerous challenges in today's market that include making the transition to digital video broadcasting, handling a large variety of video formats, creating digital contribution links, migrating smoothly from MPEG-2 to HD H.264, and establishing mass delivery of HD services.


Throughout HD World 2008, Scopus will highlight products and platforms including industry leading low-latency HD H.264 encoding, for contribution and distribution; comprehensive IP- and ASI-based headend solutions and video delivery systems; high-quality bandwidth-optimization solutions; and multiformat video encoding platforms for hybrid transmission and diverse HD/SD services.


Scopus also will feature the Eldorado NMS, a new video network management system that significantly enhances the comprehensive capabilities of Scopus' direct-to-home and content distribution solutions, allowing users to keep pace with rapidly developing digital video technologies as their service offerings and customer base grow.


The new integrated receiver processor (IRP), the next generation in Scopus' flagship receiving/processing platform for multi-format dense decoding and processing, also will be on display at HD World 2008. The IRP is based on the technology underpinning Scopus' world class integrated receiver decoder (IRD) products.


Contribution and Distribution Solutions for Broadcasters and Content Providers
The ability to achieve high video quality at low bit rates makes it possible for broadcasters and content providers to make significant improvements to video quality in newsgathering and fly-away applications. The rugged UE-9818 DSNG platform from Scopus is ideal for both mobile and fixed installations, offering low-delay HD H.264 encoding critical to live event coverage.


The single-channel, state-of-the-art UE-9818 encoder/modulator/upconverter sets up quickly, consumes little power, and enables transmission of broadcast-quality H.264 SD/HD DVB-S/S2 video. The encoder's use of DVB-S2 modulation offers users bandwidth savings of up to 30 percent. In addition to reducing transmission costs, the UE-9818 features simultaneous MPEG-2 and H.264 codec support that eases the migration from MPEG-2 SD to H.264 HD in field reporting, newsgathering, and event coverage.


Video Distribution Powerhouse
The Scopus booth at HD World 2008 will feature H.264 HD and MPEG-2 4:2:2 SD encoding and decoding solutions for low-delay, high-quality contribution. The UE-9820 and UE-9440 dense-encoding solutions yield optimum video quality at the lowest bit rates, serving as ideal solutions for distribution and contribution networks, cable TV headends, telco networks, IPTV, terrestrial broadcast, and direct broadcast satellite (DBS). With up to 30 percent bandwidth savings with DVB-S2 technology and cost-effective multi-channel encoding, operators can deliver more channels more affordably, and even launch new HD services utilizing existing bandwidth.


Eldorado Network Management System
Designed to meet the fast-paced changes in digital video headend technologies and formats, the Eldorado network management system addresses operator, teleport, and broadcaster requirements by managing services and devices across networks, scaling from small headends to large and distributed networks. It uniquely features IP and ASI routing solutions, a variety of redundancy schemes, drag-and-drop operations for topology and views, easy integration of third-party devices, and more.


Integrated Receiver Processor (IRP)
In order to meet the requirements of the February 2009 digital TV transition and continue providing "must-carry" broadcast channels in both digital and analog form, cable operators need high-definition receiver solutions that can receive, process, multiplex, decode, and perform HD downconversion of off-air ATSC digital broadcasts. Scopus meets this need with the versatile new IRP, an innovative technology platform for advanced receiving and processing applications.


Based on Scopus' widely deployed integrated receiver decoder (IRD) platform technology, the IRP platform addresses handling of multi-format SD/HD content, H.264/MPEG-2 decoding, transport stream descrambling, IP edge streaming, ASI aggregation, remultiplexing, transmodulation, HD-to-SD downconversion, and more.


As analog broadcasts are phased out, the 1RU IRP platform eases the transition to an all-digital ATSC environment. The compact unit serves as a simple, reliable solution that cable operators can deploy to decode and downconvert as many as four HD channels, applying dynamic aspect ratio adaptation to the analog NTSC output. A powerful multiplexing core ensures the IRP's long-term value to the cable operator, enabling grooming and PSI/SI and PSIP aggregation of multiple HD and SD programs for digital content distribution. The IRP supports a wide variety of inputs (8VSB, ASI, and IP) and outputs (baseband video, audio, ASI, and IP).
