What is this “Balanced” stuff?

Most microphones used in churches today are said to have “balanced” outputs. Many outputs of the mixing consoles we use are also called “balanced”. Better outboard equipment such as EQ and Reverb units have “balanced” inputs and outputs. Most quality power amps have “balanced” inputs.
